| | the sound of gunshots firing outside one's home. fearing for one's life on the way home from school. anxious family members watching news reports of burning buses. terrified siblings hiding beneath beds in the dark of night. rumours of deadly mobs and mass racial killing breaking out in the streets.
these may just be stories for us born in the generation of today but they were very real to those who survived. i have only heard of stories from my mom and unc kong beng but i am sure many more have their own accounts of the incident.
may 13, 1969. for another account, read this, taken from the nut graph.
may there be peace and reconciliation for those scarred deeply by the wounds then that were swept under the rug and never addressed. and may we post-1969 generation, who will never be able to relate to those who lived through it, never repeat such atrocities again. |
